How to Assess Your Readiness for Guitar Instruction

You might hear a lot of folks say that learning to play an instrument is essential learning for everyone. While I agree wholeheartedly that music is fantastic, the truth is not everyone wants or needs to make music. There's a difference between appreciating music and feeling compelled to make it yourself. If you're here, it's because you feel a genuine pull towards the guitar—not because anyone expects it of you, but because of your own personal desire to play.

You will never hear me say that everyone needs to play an instrument; that's simply not true. What I believe is that those drawn to music, people who feel an intrinsic urge to pick up an instrument and explore its sounds, are the ones who will find the most joy and fulfillment in the journey. If you're reading this, chances are you have that curiosity or passion. You're not looking to be convinced; you know where you want to excel and just need the support to get there.

Even if you're an advanced player who isn't convinced they even need lessons, know that you can benefit, too. Improvement is always possible, and you don't have to navigate alone or rely solely on self-teaching. Lessons aren’t just for kids; age is no barrier to benefiting from structured guidance and expert instruction. Whether you're aiming to refine your technique, explore new styles, or overcome plateaus in your playing, personalized lessons offer valuable insights and strategies to enhance your skills effectively.

What Sets Me Apart as an Instructor

My own musical path began in a home filled with the recordings of jazz greats, an experience that ignited my passion for guitar and improvisational music from an early age. Despite my parents not being musicians themselves, they encouraged my dream to play the guitar. Their support enabled me to progress through increasingly advanced lessons, learning from a variety of skilled instructors through my adolescence and into adulthood. This foundation not only shaped my playing but also my approach to teaching.

My journey from a young enthusiast to an experienced educator has equipped me with insights and strategies to support your growth effectively. I understand the challenges and joys of learning music, and I'm committed to guiding you through them with patience, expertise, and a genuine passion for teaching. My professional background in academic coaching for college students translates well into structuring a supportive learning environment for adults and older adolescents of all skill levels. I strive to teach lessons that are as encouraging as they are educational.

With extensive experience educating students across middle school, high school, and college levels, I've honed a teaching style that is both effective and adaptable. My professional experience in academic advising and education further informs my ability to guide learners of all backgrounds toward their goals. In teaching you, I draw upon these experiences to offer lessons that are not just informative but transformative.

Do I need my own guitar to start taking lessons?

Yes, you will need a guitar for your lessons—and in between for practicing, of course. If you don't already have one available to you, you can consider renting or purchasing one. Let me know if you need help, and I’m happy to guide students in selecting an instrument that works well for their needs.

What else do I need to get started?

Other than a guitar, you just need a guitar pick and a fresh set of strings. Ask me about my favorites! Don’t worry about changing the strings yourself—just have them with you for the first lesson and we’ll go over it then.

What ages do you teach?

I focus on teaching adults or adolescents over the age of 12 because my approach is tailored to those who have a clear understanding of their desire to make music. Whether you're embarking on this journey for the first time, expanding your musical repertoire, or reigniting your passion for the guitar, my goal remains the same: to support your ambition and provide the guidance you need to achieve your musical aspirations.

How often should I practice outside of lessons?

Regular practice is crucial for progress. I always say, it’s better to practice a few minutes every day than a few hours one day a week. It has to get into your mind and your muscles through repeated time. It is an exercise in patience to come back to it over and over again, but I never recommend students practice for much longer than they’re comfortable. At first, that will just be a few minutes at a time while your fingers get used to pressing on the strings. But you’ll soon build up an endurance, and I’d recommend aiming for at least 15 minutes. But you will go for as long as it keeps your attention, which will grow with the complexity of your skills.

Will I learn to play my favorite songs?

Absolutely! We can incorporate your favorite music into the lessons to make learning more enjoyable and relevant.

Do I need any prior musical knowledge or experience?

No, beginners are welcome, and no previous musical experience is necessary. We'll start from the basics and progress at a pace that's comfortable for you.

How long does it take to see progress?

Progress depends on individual practice and dedication. Most students notice improvements within a couple of weeks of consistent practice.

Are online lessons as effective as in-person lessons?

Yes, online lessons can be just as effective, offering convenience and flexibility. Both formats provide personalized instruction and feedback.

What happens if I need to miss a lesson?

I understand scheduling conflicts occur. Please inform me as soon as you know you need to reschedule, and I’ll do my best to accommodate.

“Michael helped me fall in love with guitar! He is an incredible patient guitar teacher so I never felt rushed or flustered while I was learning, but he also always kept me excited and enthused about practicing every week. He helped me learn about music theory from the very beginning so I felt like I was understanding music as a whole while I was learning guitar. Within just a few months of our lessons I felt confident playing several types of genres. He is so skilled at teaching, I still remember all of his methods years later when I pick up my guitar! I will always go back to Michael when I want to learn more guitar skills.”

-Jenny M.

Like many others, starting something new is difficult. I took a chance to learn guitar with Michael, and let’s just say the experience wasn’t scary at all. Michael is responsive and supportive. He works hard to make you feel comfortable. From day 1, he scaffolded the lessons to my pace and learning style, and he gave achievable homework.
